Among the Trolls is a first-person survival and crafting game set in a Finnish forest steeped in folklore, and it wears that identity on its sleeve. You play as a young adventurer visiting a relative's remote cabin, only to stumble into a hidden world of trolls, spirits, and ancient magic. The core loop revolves around gathering resources, building shelters, crafting tools, and surviving the hostility of both the wilderness and the supernatural. It leans toward the relaxed end of survival games rather than punishing hardcore permadeath, which makes it approachable for players who enjoy exploration and base-building but bounce off the genre's usual grind. What drew me in originally was the art direction, which blends stylized realism with Nordic myth in a way that feels painterly rather than grim, plus the promise of a troll-centric story instead of another zombie-infested map.
The first hour is slow in a deliberate way. Controls on PC are standard survival fare with a few quirks in the building placement system that took me a while to get right, and performance held up well on a mid-range rig with only minor frame dips in dense forest areas. The learning curve is gentle compared with something like Valheim's punishing early combat, though the crafting progression can feel opaque at first. My standout moment came when I wandered too far at dusk and a massive troll emerged from between the pines, humming rather than roaring. It did not attack immediately. It just watched. That single encounter sold the atmosphere more than any trailer could, and the dynamic day-night cycle plus ambient sound design kept me immersed long after I should have logged off. The UI is clean and unobtrusive, and the building system, once it clicked, became genuinely satisfying.
I have reviewed and played a fair share of survival crafters, and Among the Trolls sits comfortably alongside Valheim and Smalland in terms of ambition, though it trades their combat focus for mood and myth. What kept me playing was the sense of place. The forest feels alive in ways Valheim's procedural biomes rarely do, and the folklore-driven quests give purpose to exploration beyond filling another chest. It is not a revolution in the genre, and the pacing will test players who want immediate action, but for those who value atmosphere, story, and a less punishing survival loop, it stands out. I went in skeptical and came out genuinely charmed. It does not beat Valheim at its own game, but it never really tries to, and that is exactly why I kept playing.
features
- Folklore-driven setting 🌲 - The Finnish myth backdrop gives every creature and location a storybook quality that most survival games never attempt.
- Gentle survival loop 🏕️ - Hunger, warmth, and shelter matter, but the game avoids survival for survival's sake and lets you breathe.
- Flexible building system 🛖 - Placement is intuitive once you learn it, and the range of cabin parts encourages creative base design.
- Atmospheric world design 🌌 - Day-night cycles, ambient audio, and dense forest layouts make exploring genuinely absorbing.
- Troll encounters 🗿 - These creatures feel monumental and mythic rather than just another enemy to farm for loot.
pros
- Distinctive art style 🎨 - The painterly Nordic aesthetic gives the game a visual identity that sets it apart from its genre peers.
- Story woven into survival 📖 - Quests and lore give your gathering and building a sense of purpose beyond numbers going up.
- Approachable difficulty 🧭 - Newcomers to survival games can learn the ropes without being punished at every turn.
- Strong atmosphere 🌫️ - Sound design and environmental detail make the forest feel like a character in its own right.
- Rewarding exploration 🗺️ - Wandering off the beaten path frequently leads to meaningful discoveries rather than empty space.
cons
- Slow opening pace 🐢 - The first few hours can feel aimless for players expecting immediate action or clear direction.
- Crafting opacity 🤔 - Recipes and progression tiers are not always clearly explained, which led to some frustrating trial and error.
- Building placement quirks 🔧 - The system works, but snapping and alignment issues occasionally broke my flow.
- Limited combat depth ⚔️ - If you want a combat-driven survival game, this one will leave you wanting more.
- Genre saturation fatigue 📉 - With so many survival crafters on the market, its gentle approach may not feel essential to genre veterans.
