eFootball™ is KONAMI's ambitious free-to-play football simulator that aims to redefine the digital soccer experience by shifting away from the annual paid release model. Instead of buying a new disc every year, you download a core game and get live updates throughout the season, with teams, kits, and squads reflecting real-world changes in near real-time. The core gameplay loop revolves around building a dream squad through player card acquisitions — you scout, trade, and train athletes to form a team that matches your preferred playstyle — then taking them online to compete in ranked divisions or quick friendlies. This is a game that wants to appeal to both casual football fans who just enjoy a quick kickabout and hardcore tactical heads who obsess over formation tweaks and player instructions. I first heard about its transition from PES to eFootball through the gaming grapevine, and the initial reveal of its graphics, using the Unreal Engine, really caught my eye. Considering the turbulent launch period — it was infamously rough when it first dropped — I was also curious to see if KONAMI had finally polished it into something genuinely playable.
Jumping into the game months after launch, I have to say the experience felt surprisingly smooth on my PC rig. The controls have a weightier, more deliberate feel than typical arcade football games — you really have to think about your passes and positioning, which initially frustrated me because my instincts from other football games were all wrong. After about ten matches, though, things clicked. My standout moment came during a tense Division 4 match where my newly-scouted young striker, a no-name 72-rated player, chipped the keeper from 30 yards out just as the injury time clock ticked over. The sheer satisfaction of that shot, perfectly timed with the refined ball physics, pulled me deeper into the game. The UI can feel a bit sterile compared to the flashy menus of its competitors, but the learning curve is now manageable — there's a decent training mode that teaches you the basics. Performance-wise, I experienced steady 60fps on high settings, though I noticed some input lag during peak hour PvP matches. The Progression system for your team, which lets you boost individual player stats through XP training plans, gives long-term goals meaning for those who don't mind grinding.
Having reviewed FIFA (now EA FC) for years and dabbled in Football Manager, eFootball sits somewhere in between — it tries to blend the hands-on action of a controller-based sim with the long-term squad building of a management game. I kept playing this instead of firing up EA FC because the moment-to-moment dribbling feels more realistic — players don't magnetically control the ball like it's glued to their feet. The Dream Team mode, which is their version of Ultimate Team, feels less predatory than its rival; while there are microtransactions, I managed to build a competitive squad without spending a dime through events and login bonuses. Considering the free price tag, it does stand out in its genre for transparency and fairness, though the limited offline content still holds it back from being a complete package. For players who value a solid, skill-based match experience over a bloated feature set, this is where eFootball shines brightest.
features
- Dream Team Mode 💼 — Build your ultimate squad from scratch using player cards you earn through matches or special campaigns. It's like Ultimate Team but with less focus on pay-to-win store packs.
- Authentic Ball Physics ⚽ — The ball behaves more realistically than most football sims, meaning deflections feel random but fair, and curl shots actually follow a natural trajectory based on player's body momentum.
- Live Seasonal Updates 🔄 — When real-world transfers or injuries happen, your in-game squads update automatically. No need to wait for a patch or pay for a roster DLC.
pros
- Cost-effective entry point 💰 — You get a fully functional football sim for free, with no mandatory subscriptions or yearly fees. You only pay for optional cosmetic packs or premium player cards.
- Skill-based online matches 🎮 — Winning relies heavily on your tactical decisions and manual input precision, not just player stats or overpowered cards. A well-timed tackle beats a high-rated attacker every time.
- Active and responsive dev team 🛠️ — KONAMI has released multiple gameplay patches since the rocky launch, fixing bugs and adjusting mechanics based on community feedback. The game genuinely improved over time.
cons
- Limited offline content 🏚️ — If you prefer playing against AI offline, there's only a few modes like Practice and the standard League mode. No deep career mode or story-driven campaigns to sink into.
- Inconsistent player AI behavior 🧠 — During defending, your teammates sometimes randomly switch off or fail to track overlapping runs, making you feel like you're covering for invisible mistakes.
- Menu lag and interface clunkiness ⏳ — Navigating the main menus, especially in the team management screen, can be sluggish on base consoles. There are too many submenus to customize a simple formation.
